SIX FUNDAMENTAL

Naturopathic Principles

Naturopathic physicians practice the six fundamental principles of
naturopathic medicine.

The Healing Power of Nature
(Vis Medicatrix Naturae)

Naturopathic medicine recognises an inherent self-healing process in people that is ordered and logical. Naturopathic practitioners act to identify and remove obstacles to healing and recovery, and to facilitate and augment this inherent self-healing process.

Identify and Treat the Causes
(Tolle Causam)

The naturopathic practitioner seeks to identify and remove the underlying causes of illness rather than to merely eliminate or suppress symptoms.

First Do No Harm
(Primum Non Nocere)

Naturopathic practitioners follow three guidelines to avoid harming the patient

  • Utilise methods and medicinal substances which minimize the risk of harmful side
  • Avoid, when possible, the harmful suppression of symptoms; and
  • Acknowledge respect and work with individuals’ self-healing process.

Doctor as Teacher (Docere)

Naturopathic practitioners educate their patients and encourage self-responsibility for health. They also recognise and employ the therapeutic potential of the doctor-patient relationship.

Treat the Whole Person

Naturopathic practitioners treat each patient by taking into account individual physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental, social, and other factors. Since total health also includes spiritual health, naturopathic practitioners encourage individuals to pursue their personal spiritual development in whatever form is most appropriate.

Prevention

Naturopathic practitioners emphasise the prevention of disease by assessing risk factors, heredity and susceptibility to disease, and by making appropriate interventions in partnership with their patients to prevent illness.

About Integrative Naturopathy

Naturopathy is a holistic approach to health and wellness based on the principle that the body has the inherent ability to heal itself given the right circumstances. Marta Browne uses gentle therapeutic techniques encompassing herbal remedies, dietary adjustments, lifestyle changes and counselling. This ensures the mind and body are supported during the healing process.

As a doula, Marta promotes the use of a variety of techniques to make pregnancy, labour and delivery as healthy and calm as possible, while working with hospital, birth centre or even home-birth medical professionals.

There is a strong focus on evidence based medicine and science underpinning this practice and Marta has degrees in microbiology, parasitology and psychology. This means that some aspects of naturopathy, such as homeopathy or flower essences, are not used or recommended. Instead, there is a higher priority placed on herbal medicine, lifestyle adjustments, dietary changes and psychological health.

A referral is not required, but it is important to keep your health care team informed and up to date with any changes in your health or planned treatments.
Your private health cover may provide a reimbursement for part or all of the consultation fee, but it is important to review your own policy details to check your coverage.
At most, a finger prick may be done to obtain a drop of blood for testing, but more comprehensive tests are organised through pathology companies or your doctor.
You may wish to disrobe if there are specific areas you wish the practitioner to assess as part of the examination, but you would not be required to undress for a standard consultation.
